Tap Water: The Information You Need

It's a sobering reality around the world that, despite massive medical research programs, the rates of cancer, stroke, heart attack, and Alzheimer's disease continue to rise. Let's dive into how tap water plays a role in this reality.

A Bit of History

During World War I, our troops were supplied with a deadly weapon: chlorine gas. Unbelievably, leaders mandated that this same poisonous gas be added to our drinking water as a public health measure to kill potentially harmful bacteria. It's clear that the absence of chlorine in our tap water would bring us back to the days when hepatitis and cholera were prevalent, leading to widespread death and illness. We do not want to return to those days.

With that being said, it's important to note that America's chlorinated drinking water has opened a Pandora's Box of other medical dangers, as reported by leading researchers and scientists across the country. These dangers include cancer, stroke, heart attack, and premature aging.

In the 90s, Joseph Price, M.D. states in his book, 'Coronaries/Cholesterol/Chlorine,' that, "The basic cause of atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and most forms of strokes is chlorine. The chlorine contained in processed water. Two decades after the start of chlorinating our drinking water, the present epidemic of heart trouble and cancer began."

Additional contributions to this discussion are made in the book 'The Water We Drink: Water Quality And Its Effects On Health' written by Joshua I. Barzilay, M.D., Winkler G. Weinberg, M.D., and J. William Eley, M.D.

Dangers of Untreated Water

Your Skin: The Largest Organ

As your largest organ, your skin absorbs everything. This includes the contaminants found in our tap water. Through dermal absorption, your body can accumulate more contaminants and cancer-causing agents over the course of 24 normal-length showers or baths than from the amount of tap water you would drink over five years.

Take a minute to learn about what your body can absorb during a shower by means of inhalation and skin absorption.

Chlorine
This disinfectant is added to most municipal water supplies and is known to:

  • Harden Arteries
  • Destroy Proteins in the Body
  • Irritate Skin & Sinus Conditions
  • Aggravate Asthma, Allergies, & Respiratory Problems

Chloroform - DCA (Dichloroacetic Acid)
This powerful byproduct of chlorination is a known carcinogen and can:

  • Cause Excessive Free Radical Formation (Accelerated Aging)
  • Cause Normal Cells to Mutate
  • Cause Cholesterol to Oxidize
  • Alter Cholesterol Metabolism
  • Cause Liver Cancer in Lab Animals

MX (A Chlorinated Acid)
MX is a chlorinated acid that has been found in all chlorinated water in which it has been tested. This contaminant is known to cause genetic mutations.

Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs)
VOCs are organic chemicals, including pesticides and herbicides, that are sometimes found in drinking water supplies across the United States. This class of contaminants is readily vaporizable at relatively low temperatures and features no visible characteristics, smell, or taste. Tests must be performed to discover these chemicals. VOCs are known to:

  • Cause Cancer
  • Cause Kidney, Liver, & Brain Damage
  • Damage the Nervous, Reproductive, & Immune Systems

What The Experts Are Saying

"A long hot shower can be dangerous. The toxic chemicals are inhaled in high concentration."
- Bottom Line, August 1987, Dr. John Andelman, PH.D

"Drinking tap water that is chlorinated is hazardous, if not deadly to your health."
- Healthy Water for a Longer Life, Dr. Martin Fox

"Is your Water Safe—The Dangerous State of Your Water."
- U.S. News & World Report, July 29, 1991

"Known carcinogens are found in drinking water as a direct consequence of the practice of chlorination."
- Municipal Environmental Research Laboratory - Francis T. Maye, Director.

"Scientific studies have linked chlorine and chlorination by-products to cancer of the bladder, liver, stomach, rectum, and colon, as well as heart disease, atherosclerosis."
- Kemysts Laboratory, Dr. Riddle, Ph.D.

The Risks of Showering

When discussing cumulative health damage, showering in chlorinated water could be one of the biggest risks you take every day. In the short term, chlorinated shower and bath water can irritate your eyes, skin, throat, sinuses, and lungs. The long-term risks include:

  • Excessive Free Radical Formation (Accelerated Aging)
  • High Vulnerability to Genetic Mutations (Cancer)
  • Difficulty Metabolizing Cholesterol (Heart Disease)
  • Hardened Arteries
